Developing number sense and understanding of place value

  • Online training session OX2 9NJ venue (map)

Aims

  1. To determine the key aspects of ‘number sense’ and consider how we can support children with learning about linked concepts, including through wide-ranging counting experiences and use of structured representations.

  2. To determine teaching related to place value that involves an exploration of mathematical structures and progression to solving problems of greater complexity.

Background

This interactive online training will focus on eliciting strategies that will enable teachers to support the learning needs of children still in need of establishing firm foundations linked with developing number sense and understanding place value.

A range of diagnostic activities will be suggested, and ideas given about how pupils can then be advanced from their current stages of understanding.
