'Much research has shown that young children’s spatial rather than numerical abilities predict their overall mathematical achievement' (Young et al 2018) This can be achieved through effective block play.
This session will focus on developing children’s spatial reasoning through block play and small world, with consideration to:
Exploring the principles and progression within block play, looking at how an enabling environment which offers choice, accessibility and autonomy can support mathematical development
Investigating how practitioners can enhance their block play provision, motivating children to use mathematical language within their play
Considering ways in which the adult can facilitate opportunities for developing children’s spatial reasoning
This will be a practical, interactive session, which will involve sharing a range of ideas with practitioners to discuss and develop thinking for use back in the classroom.
